JoAnn McNutt, PhD, is an organizational psychologist and board consultant based in the San Francisco Bay Area with extensive experience designing assessment methods and data analysis strategies, specifically in the areas of board, chair, CEO, director, and committee assessments. She combines content knowledge in corporate governance, quantitative and qualitative research, and an educational background in organizational behavior and psychology. When coaching senior executives to strengthen their leadership skills and improve team performance, she draws on the training and experience she gained as an officer in the military.
JoAnn advises boards and executives facing a wide array of challenges, including major organizational and governance restructuring initiatives, strategic visioning and planning, board-management alignment, and board development and effectiveness. Clients include the boards of corporate and non-profit institutions from a wide range of industries, such as healthcare, education, consumer services, oil and energy, and performing arts.
JoAnn has been with Nygren Consulting since 2008. Previously, she was at Mercer Delta Consulting where she worked closely with David Nygren, PhD, founder of Nygren Consulting, to establish Mercer Delta’s corporate governance consulting practice. Before joining Mercer Delta Consulting, JoAnn was an organizational development specialist with PeopleSoft eCenter (now Oracle) in Pleasanton, CA. JoAnn also served for 13 years in the U.S. Army Reserve, reaching the rank of Captain in the Medical Service Corps. She was the Company Commander of the 352nd Combat Support Hospital based in Oakland, CA, and was a cadre member of the 63rd Regional Readiness Command’s Company Team Leadership Development Program, where she taught change management.
As an organizational psychologist, JoAnn has investigated topics ranging from the role of organizations in supporting military personnel who are returning to the workforce to best practices in governance and board effectiveness.
JoAnn serves on the National Board of Advisors of the American Hospital Association’s (AHA) Center for Healthcare Governance (CHG). She was a member of AHA CHG’s Blue Ribbon Panel for Governance of Physician Organizations and their Blue Ribbon Panel for Governance of Collaborative Partnerships that Improve Community Health.
